Art Williams is an example of a retiree who pursued a lifelong dream to become a watercolor artist. Born and raised in Watertown, New York, he followed his early desire to become a civil engineer and obtained Bachelor of Science degrees from St. Lawrence University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and a Masters degree in Civil Engineering and Economic Planning from Stanford University. He also has an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering from RPI and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College. After college, he entered the U.S. Army and began a military career which lasted 34 years. He retired in 1996 from the Army as a Lieutenant General and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
In 1996, he moved to Fort Myers, Florida, and he started beginner classes in watercolor. He has continued to enhance his artistic talents by painting with a variety of established artists. He now sells his art through art shows at the Herons Glen Golf and Country Club, N. Fort Myers. He also has shown his art work at other locations in Southwest Florida, such as the Seaweed Galleries on Sanibel and Captiva Islands; Sunshine Galleries; Summermood Café and Gallery in Punta Gorda; Pine Island Art Show at Matlacha; and the Cape Coral Cultural Park Theater; plus art shows in Lexington, VA .
